    In 1743, Richard and Thomas Penn (sons of William Penn the founder of Pennsylvania, and grandsons of Sir William Penn for whom Pennsylvania is named) planned the town of Reading with Conrad Weiser. Taking its name from the town of Reading in England in honor of their home, it was established in 1748. Upon the creation of Berks County in 1752 the town became the county seat.

    Overlooking the city on Mount Penn is Reading's symbol, a Japanese-style pagoda visible from almost everywhere in town and referred to locally as "The Pagoda". Built in 1908 as a hotel and restaurant, it remains a popular tourist attraction.

    The city of Reading lent its name to the now-defunct Reading Railroad, which brought anthracite coal from the Pennsylvania Coal Region to cities along the Schuylkill River. The railroad is one of the four railroad properties in the classic United States version of the Monopoly board game.

    The film version of John Updike’s “Rabbit, Run,” gave Reading a rare moment in the Hollywood spotlight. The filming of “Rabbit, Run” began on June 25th, 1969. Fifty-five percent of the movie was filmed in Reading. In all, 28 sets were used including a set constructed in an abandoned supermarket at Penn Ave. and Tulpehocken Street in West Reading, and Barbey’s playground on Schuykill Ave.View Trailer

The Sovereign Performing Arts Center is home to the Reading Symphony, one of the longest continuously-operating symphonies in the United States. It has also hosted numerous different events. Willie Nelson, Hillary Duff, Jerry Seinfeld, David Copperfield, and Sesame Street Live are just a few of the shows that have been seen at the theater. The Reading Eagle Theater at the Sovereign Center has hosted artists such as Dolly Parton, Daniel O'Donnell, Dave Koz, Marilyn Manson and Brad Paisley.
